An off-duty airline pilot was charged with 83 counts of tried homicide after he allegedly tried to close off the engines on an Alaska Airways aircraft whereas it was in flight. 

The person, Joseph David Emerson, has been arrested in accordance with the Port of Portland (Ore.). 

Emerson apparently tried to close off the engines by pulling on the handles of the fireplace extinguishers on board. 

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 22, aboard a flight that was scheduled to go from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco. It was diverted to Portland. 

Emerson was subdued by the flight crew and handcuffed to a seat. The flight landed safely and with out additional incident in Portland; there have been no accidents reported. Emerson not solely faces the 83 counts of tried homicide however 83 counts of reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor, and one felony rely of endangering an plane. 

He’s presently in custody. 

Sarcastically, he was heading to San Francisco as a result of he was scheduled to pilot a flight from there later. 

In an announcement, Alaska Airways stated Emerson “unsuccessfully tried to disrupt the operation of the engines.”
