Many people are surprised to find that new hotels and resorts have opened up during the worst travel slump of our lifetimes, but hey, these projects take years to complete. We’ve checked out the latest luxury jungle lodge to open in Central America: ORIGINS Costa Rica.
ORIGINS is technically a chain hotel as it’s part of a new brand from Accor called Mantis. It certainly doesn’t look like any big brand hotel you’ve ever been in though. With just nine individual bungalows that start at around $700 per night, this feels more like a well-funded boutique hotel passion project for picky international jet-setters. Your experience will be customized and designed for your wants and needs.
There is no cookie-cutter mold here. From the moment that the staff reaches out to you in advance of your stay, the itinerary is designed around what guests want with a visit to the jungle. From all-day adventure (and there is plenty of it thanks to the numerous activities included in a stay here) to pampering in the spa to culinary dining worthy of a fine Parisian restaurant, a stay here is designed to perfection.
Those who arrive at the Liberia airport won’t have to spend a day getting here. ORIGINS Luxury Lodge is in the Alajuela area of the north, about 90 minutes away from where you touch down. This is a real jungle experience though, with great wildlife viewing and adventure options all around. The list of activities on site is a long one, including night safari hikes, cooking classes, lagoon fishing, and guided naturalist walks. Then the staff can also organize other tours in the area like ziplining, tubing, standup paddleboarding, rafting, or visits to cacao plantations.
As we’ve noted before, fine dining in Costa Rica is a novelty and many resorts in the country can be a disappointment at meal time. That’s not the case at ORIGINS lodge though, where around 70% of what’s served comes from the property’s own garden and an acclaimed chef from France trained the kitchen crew. This care extends to the sumptuous made-to-order breakfast included in the rates.
Each of the individual casitas has an ample balcony with a view that includes a free-standing fireplace and a heated plunge pool. They are designed to blend into the hillside and use a lot of natural wood and earth tones. They’re luxuriously furnished though, have rainshowers and minibars, and yes, you can get some work done with fast Wi-Fi if needed. When you want to visit the main infinity pool spilling into the jungle or head to dinner, you summon a golf cart ride via walkie-talkie.
This high-service, pampering lodge offers the ultimate Costa Rica vacation experience: up close with nature, in an eco-friendly lodge that avoids plastic and waste, but with all the comforts you expect from a luxury hotel.
