Australians need 'incentive' to be fruit pickers even with worker shortage

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud says there are not enough workers to help the harvest and efforts to “incentivise Australians” into taking the work has failed.

“We’ve known about this since Mark and I made sure the agriculture minister from each state understood the severity of this and the problem we were going to get when we hit the hotter months,” he told Sky News.

Mr Littleproud said even when working holiday visas were extended, the states’ unwillingness to allow in seasonal workers and Australians unwillingness to do the work has hurt the agriculture sector.

“We’ve got to try and incentivise Australians to take this work, and I appreciate this work is some thousands of kilometres away from where unemployed Australians live.”
