Mystery is intriguing don’t you think? I’m a trained journalist and marketer with four different Instagram accounts with a combined audience of over 500,000 followers. I spent my youth backpacking around the World. Whilst I had, quite frankly, the time of my life the ideologies of a hedonistic youth and that of an affluent, older gentleman are vastly different. Consequently, in the manic 24/7 World in which we currently operate time, the great commodity of the 20th century, is increasingly short. I therefore am continually driven to seek more luxurious surroundings, specifically those boutique or luxury.

Abandoned dreams in the Azores

Hotel Monte Palace

This abandoned luxury is now a popular sightseeing destination.

The hotel, sounds in principle, perfect. A luxury Azores hotel on the crater rim of a dormant volcano overlooking one of the most picturesque lakes featuring restaurants, bars, a casino and even a nightclub. Built in the 1980s ahead of the rise in tourism

One major stumbling point seems to be in its attraction – make sense?! The view as you can see below is spectacular. But in my visit here that view changed several times within the space of an half an hour. By the time I’d climbed up the rambling stairway past vacant graffiti lift shafts you couldn’t see 10 feet due to the think fog. Ten minutes later it was really damp with driving rain. That in the nutshell is the crazy weather of the Azores!

Monte Palace view

View from the Monte Palace

It lies above the lovely village of Sete Citades and can be reached by steep winding roads and was opine when there can hardly have been any tourism – great idea, poor planning for any of you wannabe hotel builders like myself take note!

The hotel remained open for just over a year. Now it’s a tourist venue in it’s own right. This is the sort of building I love and always try and find when I’m away – one of my favs is in Bangkok. However in England health and safety would have shut this down years ago! It really is at your own risk, which if course, is part of the fun!

Exploring the Monte Palace

Exploring the Monte Palace

You can explore the entire hotel from deep ion the basement to the spectacular views form the roof. It would make a great horror film venue and I’d love to check out the creepy basement at dark.

It’s still for sale – go ahead and make your offer! If not I’d highly recommend that you take a trip and check it out for yourself.
